Shiv Naraine

Shiv Sahai (Steve) Naraine, former Vice President of the Republic of Guyana and High Commissioner of Guyana to India, has died on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at his home in Toronto of complications of heart disease. He was 89.
Mr. Naraine entered public life in Guyana in 1970 at the invitation of the president of Guyana. He moved up the political ranks of government and by 1982 he reached the ranks of Vice President. In 1983 he accepted the post of High Commissioner of Guyana to India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, an office he held until 1990.
In 1990 he and his family returned to Guyana where he started SRKN engineering, a private engineering / consulting firm that he ran with his two sons. In 1997, Steve and his wife Betty moved to Toronto where they have lived ever since.
Although Steve Naraine lived a highly successful public life, it was his inner life that gave him the most satisfaction. He was a deeply spiritual man since he began his practice of raja yoga with the Brahma Kumaris in 1976 and became a central figure in the million-plus person organization. And he was devoted to family, saying that his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the breath of his life.
He is survived by his wife Betty, four daughters, Savi, Sita, Gayatri and Nadira; two sons, Ravi and Krishna; two daughters-in-law, Chandra and Kamini; six grandchildren, Kiran, Kavita, Sanjay, Pratiksha, Kunal and Urvashi; and two great granddaughters, Neela and Genevieve.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 31st, 2013 at Highland Funeral Home Markham Chapel at 10 Cachet Woods Court, Markham, Ontario, (N\E corner of 16th Avenue and Highway 404) from 6-8:30pm. A Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 1st, 2013 at 10am, followed by a procession to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery and Crematorium, 375 Mt. Pleasant Road for a service and cremation.
